Spoiler Alert:

Not one of them has to do with zoning out in front of a screen!

We are often pulled in many directions in life. Society makes us feel like we should be putting ourselves last in order to “get it all done”.  But self-care is crucial to our health and shouldn’t be thought of as a treat or reward but instead be a way of life. We can healthfully handle life when we are taking care of our bodies and minds. Read on for 5 simple ways to practice self-care this weekend!

Self-Care:

  • Prevents “overload burnout”: We’ve all been there: you push yourself to the point that you can’t take anymore so you just give up.
  • Reduces the negative effects of stress: Taking care of yourself means keeping your stress from taking over so you can function at full capacity.
  • Helps you refocus: Breaks are the epitome of self-care, and studies show they’re great for helping you do what you do… .better.  We gain a new perspective after a break.

Here are 5 ways YOU can practice Self-Care this weekend:

1. Try Hygge

You may or may not have heard of this funny little Danish word pronounced “hoo-gah” that describes being cozy, mindful, and approaching life simply. Try slipping into some furry socks, lighting a candle, sipping a hot cup of (insert your drink here), grabbing a  book, and sitting in your favorite part of your home and just being.

2.  Unplug

For some this may be a challenge but remember, this is about what makes you feel recharged and relaxed. It can be freeing stepping back from social media, others’ opinions, and all the stimulation that is constantly bombarding us through our devices.

3.  Go for a Mindful Walk

I realize this depends on what the weather is like outdoors and that many of you may walk for exercise, but mindfully walking is different. Pay attention to your senses. What are you seeing? The colors, the textures, the things surrounding you. What sounds and scents are you aware of?  How are you feeling?

4.  Try Simplifying an Errand

I know we all have errands/chores on the weekends and may not be able to devote time to self-care without feeling a little guilty. Practice self-care and get a chore done simultaneously! Try having your groceries delivered! Instacart is my new best friend and SO much easier, cost-effective, and convenient than I thought.

5.  Practice Meditation

While this is a habit I myself have struggled with, I have found the app Calm extremely helpful. But there are many apps out there that help one ease into the practice of meditation. Meditation can help with: insomnia, reducing stress, increasing focus and allows us to be more present and engaged in life.

It is important to note, there are different areas of self-care such as physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, and emotional. It may help to explore the different ways in which you can practice self-care that best fit you and your needs.
